Phone scam

DOMAINSunder is notifing all domain name customers of a recent phone call security scam using the CIRA name that was brought to our attention by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

In this particular scam, a caller, claiming to be associated with CIRA, asks for information about the user’s computer. The caller then guides the user through a process that ultimately provides the scammer remote access to user’s computer and the information located on its hard drive.

In addition to this advisory we are placing a notice on CIRA’s corporate website that notifies visitors of the scam and advises them to report these phone calls to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre [link to http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/english/reportit_howtoreportfraud.html].

CIRA will continue to track this scam and keep you updated on any developments.

While this scam is currently associated with dot-ca names, all domain name customers should be aware of this scam as there may be similar ones for dot-com names.
